Hoover, Alabama · Four utilities

Hoover is four water systems, not one.

Most of the city is on Central Alabama Water. Greystone is on Shelby County. Lake Cyrus and Ross Bridge are on Bessemer. Quail Run and Valley Station are on Pelham. The utility boundaries do not follow the city limits, the four reports publish different numbers, and almost nobody selling water treatment in this city will mention it.

Divided highway running south through wooded hills in central Alabama.
One city, four systems Hoover grew by annexation along the highways, and it absorbed neighborhoods that were already plumbed to whoever was closest. The water followed the pipes, not the city line.

Which system serves your address.

The City of Hoover publishes this split itself, and it is the first thing worth establishing — because every other number on this page depends on it. If you are not sure, look at who sends your water bill.

Service-area split as published by the City of Hoover. Hardness and byproduct figures from each utility's own annual water quality report: Central Alabama Water 2026 report covering 2025 data; Shelby County Water Services 2023 report, two treatment plants reported separately; Pelham Water Works, wells and purchased surface water reported separately. The limit for trihalomethanes is 80 ppb and every figure above is inside it.

The second row is the one that surprises people. A Greystone address is on a different utility, a different source and a different treatment plant from a house in Bluff Park four miles away — and it is reported at roughly 5 grains, moderately hard, while the Central Alabama Water system that covers most of the city publishes a range running from slightly hard all the way to very hard. Those are different problems with different answers.

What it changes

The answer is different on each system.

This is the practical consequence of the table, and the reason a single recommendation for "Hoover" is not worth much.

  • Greystone, on Shelby County Water: softening is probably not the priority. The published 5.0 to 5.6 grains sits below the roughly 7-grain line where softening starts paying for itself in soap performance, spotting and appliance life. The byproduct figures are the higher ones on this page, which points at carbon rather than salt.
  • Most of Hoover, on Central Alabama Water: it genuinely depends, and nobody can tell you from a map. The utility publishes 2.2 to 13.1 grains system-wide and does not break it down by neighborhood. We do not know whether your street is at 3 grains or 12, and neither does anyone quoting you a softener over the phone.
  • Quail Run and Valley Station, on Pelham: which source reaches you decides it. Pelham publishes 4.4 grains from one source and 11.9 from another. One of those justifies softening and one does not.
  • Lake Cyrus and Ross Bridge, on Bessemer: we will not guess. We do not hold a current Bessemer Water report, so we have no published figure to give you. A test at your tap is the only honest answer we have for those two neighborhoods today.

What is the same on all four: an under-sink reverse osmosis system works on any of them. It is a standard appliance, it does not need a water test to specify, and the price is published. The part that varies by system — and by address inside a system — is whether you need anything done to the whole house.

Questions

Hoover water, answered.

Who provides water in Hoover?

Four utilities, depending where you are. The City of Hoover publishes the split: most of Hoover is Central Alabama Water; Greystone, excluding Greystone Highlands, is the Shelby County Water System; Lake Cyrus and Ross Bridge are Bessemer Water; Quail Run and Valley Station are Pelham Water. Your water bill is the fastest way to tell which one you are on.

How hard is the water in Hoover?

There is no single Hoover figure, because there is no single Hoover utility. Central Alabama Water publishes 38 to 224 mg/L across its system, about 2.2 to 13.1 grains per gallon. Shelby County Water Services publishes 86 and 95 ppm from its two plants, about 5.0 and 5.6 grains. Pelham publishes 75 and 204 mg/L, about 4.4 and 11.9 grains, depending on source. We do not hold a current report for Bessemer Water.

None of those is your number. They are system figures, and the only way to get yours is to measure it at your tap.

Do I need a water softener in Hoover?

Maybe not, and which system you are on changes the odds. Softening generally starts earning its cost above about 7 grains per gallon. Greystone's published 5.0 to 5.6 grains is below that. An address on Central Alabama Water could be anywhere in a range that crosses the line in the middle. We mail a free hardness test, you run it yourself in about two minutes, and then the conversation is about a measurement instead of a guess.

Why does my neighbor's water seem different from mine?

Because it may genuinely be different water. Hoover's utility boundaries do not follow the city limits, so two houses a few streets apart can sit on separate systems with separate sources and separate treatment. The published disinfection byproducts differ as well: Central Alabama Water reports trihalomethanes from 11.4 to 26.0 ppb, Shelby County Water Services reports 17.0 to 54.0 ppb at one plant and 17.8 to 22.5 at the other. The limit is 80 and all of those are inside it, but they are not the same water.

Do you serve Hoover?

Our office is in Hoover, at 500 Southland Drive, and the whole city is inside our everyday service area on all four systems. Under-sink reverse osmosis, whole-home treatment, and ongoing filter service down to a single cartridge change. Installation is performed by an Alabama-licensed plumbing contractor. Our full service area is here.

Find out which number is actually yours

We mail a hardness test kit, free. You run it yourself, nobody comes to the house, and you keep the result. On a city split across four utilities, that is the only way to answer the question honestly.
